The Sun Cross is among the oldest marks humans have made: a cross held inside a circle. We do not know exactly what it meant to the people who carved it. That is not a flaw in the story, it is the story!
The sun rises, crosses the sky, sinks below the horizon, and returns. No ceremony we invent can hurry it and none can stop it. A cross inside a circle mirrors that patient arithmetic. Four arms, like the four seasons, the four directions, the four elements, the stages of a life. And around them all, the circle: continuity, wholeness, the frame that holds the turning.
Some readers of the symbol have called it a cosmogram, a small map of the cosmos in motion. From a Nordic animist view, it says something quieter still: that you are not standing outside of nature looking in. People, animals, seasons, soil, and stars all belong to the same living world. The symbol does not separate, it gathers.
